UC helps family farmers expand strawberry sales
UC Cooperative Extension is helping Sacramento-area strawberry growers sell their crops to school cafeterias, increasing farm income, providing fresh fruit to school kids and cutting waste.
The farmers typically sell their berries at roadside produce stands. During the peak growing season the sales don’t match the production, and some fruit is left to rot in the fields. Ten small-scale family farms, most of them owned by Southeast Asian refugees, now sell strawberries to five local school districts.
The farmers collectively increased their sales by $58,000. A small-scale farm typically grosses an average of $15,000.
UC researchers, with a USDA grant, also created an online map to help consumers find spots to buy farm-fresh berries. They identified 95 Sacramento-area strawberry stands.
