- UC researchers created 1,482 new inventions in fiscal year 2009. That's an average of four a day.
- 47 startups based on UC discoveries launched last year.
- UC holds more U.S. patents than any university in the world. UC-owned patents total 3,617, including 244 issued last year.
- The top-earning UC invention in 2009 was the Hepatitis-B vaccine, discovered in 1979 at UC San Francisco.
Keep the master plan promise alive
On April 27 I joined with the leaders of California State University and California Community Colleges and more than 250 alumni and supporters to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the California Master Plan for Higher Education with an advocacy day in Sacramento. Our goal was to win financial support for higher education in the state's 2010-11 budget. The CSU and CCC chancellors and myself participated with Gov. Schwarzenegger in a higher education roundtable discussion where he delivered very encouraging news for UC.
