The data on value added come from the Brookings Institution's April 2015 Report, Beyond College Rankings: A Value-Added Approach to Assessing Two- and Four-Year Schools. These data factor in an institution's demographics, selectivity, discipline mix, and other characteristics to evaluate if students who attend an institution have better economic outcomes than they would have had if they enrolled elsewhere: this is the value added. For example, only looking at raw earnings could overvalue a highly selective, elite institution and undervalue an institution enrolling more disadvantaged students.

State averages are weighted based on undergraduate enrollment and only include institutions that were included in the Brookings Institution and College Scorecard research datasets. Not all measures are available for all institutions.
