A year ago, I arrived at the University of California with deep admiration for an institution I knew primarily through its unparalleled reputation and remarkable accomplishments. I had read its history, followed its discoveries, and seen its influence extend far beyond California.
I am not alone in regarding UC as the world’s most important university, and the opportunity to become part of this renowned institution was certainly alluring. But after almost 40 years at or near the helm of four university systems, I wasn’t sure I needed to start over at a fifth!
After much reflection and conversation with my family — including, importantly, my 1-year-old grandson Jamie — I decided I really had no choice. Yes, it was an opportunity to join the premier public university in the country, but more important to me at this stage in my life, it was informed in equal measure by a sense of responsibility to offer what I could to this singular institution, so important to America and the world, at a time of great stress, and the excitement of being part of what I believe will be an even brighter future. I have not for a moment doubted that decision.
