America's scientific leadership is under threat. Join UC as we speak up for science.
The future of American science is in jeopardy. Since January, progress in thousands of academic and government labs has stalled as federal agencies have frozen funding or cancelled grants. Now Congress is considering a budget for the coming year that could include deep cuts to the federal agencies that fund science at U.S. colleges and universities.
These proposed cuts would devastate scientific research across the country, including at UC, where federal funding makes up more than half of all research support. Now UC faces further threats: in August, the federal government abruptly froze over $500 million in research funding at UCLA, and is demanding a $1 billion settlement.

That’s why the University of California is launching Speak Up for Science. This growing movement of citizens, students and scientists is mobilizing to send a resounding message to America’s elected leaders: Cutting federal science spending will hurt every American.
How to take action
If you want to join the effort, this is the time to act. Right now, Congress is considering legislation that will determine the federal budget for the coming year.
It’s quick and easy to contact your members of Congress through the Speak Up for Science action center to ask them to reject proposed cuts to agencies like the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. You'll also find images and messaging you can share on social media to help spread the word.
