UC President James B. Milliken has announced the formation of a new UC AI Steering Committee. Coming at a critical juncture in the adoption of AI across nearly every sector of society, the steering committee recognizes the importance of AI and its adoption, including the ethical, educational and societal issues it poses for the university, the state and the world.
UC campuses, academic health centers and national laboratories are already leading the way in defining the AI landscape, from health care and research to climate science and robotics. UC will continue to lead and shape the broader public conversation on AI’s opportunities, implications and impact.
“Much of what we do will be transformed, advanced and disrupted by artificial intelligence,” said President Milliken. “This technology can provide new ways to expand our reach and advance our teaching, research and patient care. Across our campuses, academic health centers, and affiliated national labs, the University of California should be at the forefront of this effort as we shape AI’s impact on the future of our state, our country and the world.”
The steering committee reflects a commitment to bridging academic excellence, industry innovation and public service, with leaders selected for their expertise and experience.
President Milliken serves as the executive sponsor of the committee, which is co-chaired by UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla, UC Davis distinguished professor and Academic Senate Chair Ahmet Palazoglu, and UC’s Vice President of Digital Information and Technology Van Williams. UC Board of Regents Co-Chair Maria Anguiano and Alumni Regent Ann Wang serve as special advisors to the president on AI. Ann Kirschner, an academic and entrepreneurship leader, is also a special advisor to the president on AI.
The steering committee will serve as a hub, led by its faculty, administrative, student, and staff members, and will involve many more from within the university as well as industry, policy and other representatives in its work. The steering committee will provide periodic reports on its progress to the Board of Regents.
