University of California President Janet Napolitano today (Aug. 25) issued the following statement on the death of U.S. Senator John McCain, with whom she worked during her tenure as the governor of Arizona and as secretary of Homeland Security:
I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Senator John McCain, an American hero who proudly represented the people of Arizona in Congress for more than three decades. He was a true patriot and one of our nation’s most dedicated public servants, often working across the aisle on important issues such as national security, immigration and health care. Few have served our country with as much integrity and distinction as Sen. McCain, and his unique perspective will be sorely missed.
