President Milliken’s Priorities

The University of California’s fundamental mission of teaching, research and public service generates tangible impact that ripples across the state, the nation and the world. As higher education and research face new pressures and possibilities, President Milliken is meeting this era of extraordinary change with four strategic priorities to shape the direction of the University’s shared work and future.

Bring UC to more Californians

As emerging technologies drive new ways of learning, working and accessing services across California, UC has more opportunities than ever before to reach Californians where they live and learn, at every stage of their lives and careers. From lifelong learning programs to healthcare partnerships, we’re going to expand our presence in communities across the state and connect more people with the benefits of UC research, healthcare, public service programs and education.

Prepare students for success

Our undergraduate students face a changing world, and UC is focused on the knowledge, skills and experiences students need to thrive at the University and in their careers. Drawing on faculty expertise, the University is examining whether long-standing approaches to college preparation are keeping pace with changes in education, technology and the demands of the workforce. We are partnering with educators, families and communities to help students prepare for college, succeed once they arrive on campus, and thrive in their careers.

Public leadership in the AI era

Artificial intelligence is transforming how we learn, work, conduct research and deliver healthcare. Across UC, our researchers, faculty, clinicians, students and staff are already advancing AI applications and discoveries for teaching, learning, healthcare and University operations. Our scale and public mission provide the University with the opportunity to shape the future of AI. UC will build on our current leadership in this field to prepare for an AI-shaped future, accelerating innovation and advancing responsible approaches that keep human judgment, ethics and public benefit at the center.

Strengthen UC’s long-term sustainability

Built over generations and sustained by the continued investment in the people, research, education and healthcare, the University of California is a global leader. Lasting institutional sustainability depends on looking beyond today’s challenges and preparing for what comes next. UC’s ability to serve California depends on the long-term strength of the University itself. We must use resources thoughtfully, find new and more effective ways of working, and build partnerships that support the University’s mission.
