Richard K. Olney, MD, founding director of the ALS Treatment and Research Center at UCSF and a pioneer in clinical research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), has died at age 64, following his own eight-year battle with the disease.

The University of California today (July 16) announced the receipt of a $15 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (PPFP). This funding will help expand the number of PPFP fellowships at UC and establish a program for hiring faculty whose research and teaching emphasize diversity and equity in the humanities and humanities-inflected social sciences at the University’s six federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI). These include UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Merced, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis.

The University of California’s Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Initiative recently released a report titled “La Lucha Sigue: The University of California’s Role as a Hispanic-Serving Research Institution System.” With an eye on the Latinx communities’ future in-state growth and vital contributions to California’s economy, the HSI Initiative gives UC leaders a window into the Latinx student experience, while highlighting California’s looming economic challenges.

The University of California announced today the recent appointment of Regent Cecilia V. Estolano to chair of the UC Board of Regents for 2021-22, effective July 1. Chair Estolano was elected by her colleagues and will oversee her first board meeting in July.
