University of California NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA: Repatriation status
The University of California (UC) is committed to the repatriation of Native American human remains and cultural items in accordance with the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), its accompanying regulations, and CalNAGPRA. The fundamental importance of facilitating the repatriation of Native American and Native Hawaiian human remains and cultural items undergirds the UC Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy (PDF).
This dashboard reports the repatriation status of ancestral remains and the four categories of cultural items defined by NAGPRA: associated funerary objects, unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. Note that UC considers all Native American items to be potential cultural items under NAGPRA, and the number of objects that are “not yet repatriated” will increase as tribes identify items that belong to these four categories.
¹ Either under consultation, or have been reported to tribes and awaiting consultation.
² Either published in the Federal Register, or awaiting publication.
³ Legal transfer of control has occurred. All remains and items in this column were also previously published in the Federal Register.
⁴ Counts only reflect items that have been identified as one of the four types of Cultural Items. UC defers to tribal traditional knowledge in the identification of cultural items. As consultation on potential cultural items continues, we expect these numbers to increase.
⁵ Counts of museum accessions and archaeological sites have been provided as another metric, as counts of remains and items may fluctuate without an actual change in size of collections. This could be due to new information gathered through consultation or research on provenience and provenance. Counts of accessions and sites are less likely to see significant change. See "Clarification on counts" tab for more information.
