Nominations sought for ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ Nobel laureate meetings fellowship

The University of California’s Office of the President and the Office of the Chief Investment Officer are seeking applicants from UC students and postdoctoral fellows to attend an invitation-only week of lectures and small seminars with Nobel laureates in Lindau, Germany. For those selected to attend, UC will cover the cost of travel and attendance for up to 20 students in summer 2020. The deadline to apply to UCOP is Oct. 4, 2019.

The inaugural class of the UC President’s Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings Fellows will join some 600 university students and postdoctoral fellows from around the world. During the week of June 28, 2020, the program will concentrate on the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry and physiology, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research.

A second week of the program, August 25-29, 2020, will center on economic sciences. The deadline for the economic fellowship application to UCOP is October 28, 2019.

“The theme of the meetings — educate, inspire and connect — has led us to see these meetings as places where our students not only learn, but begin to build the research networks that will enrich their lives and help create the broadest sense of community,” said UC President Janet Napolitano.

“We are pleased the Office of the Chief Investment Officer is able to sponsor UC students to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from and interact with Nobel laureates from around the world and advance interdisciplinary research and collaboration,” said Jagdeep Bachher, UC’s chief investment officer.

Fellowship program details and description

The Office of the Chief Investment Officer is sponsoring students and postdoctoral fellows to travel to Lindau, Germany, to participate in a Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting. Allowable expenses are covered by University of California Travel Policy. Fellows may be asked to travel to an orientation meeting prior to the Lindau Nobel Meeting. Expenses associated with that trip and any other trips authorized by the Office of the President for this purpose will be covered.

Selection criteria

Overall selection criteria are provided by the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. The criteria for the economic sciences program may be found here. In addition, UC will seek to ensure that qualified individuals from each of our 10 campuses are represented in the finalist pool. This does not necessarily mean, however, that two individuals from each campus will be selected.

Selection process

Campuses may each forward up to five nominations to the Office of the President. These will be screened both by Lindau and a UC advisory group. President Napolitano will select UC’s fellows based upon the recommendations of the UC advisory group.
