The program helps campuses cultivate the careers of outstanding Ph.D. recipients by providing funding for fellowships, professional development and faculty mentoring.

Scholars from any field — and regardless of race or gender — may qualify for the PPFP program, so long as their research, teaching and public service contributes to diversity and equal opportunity at the University of California.

The investment in promising early career post-docs is paying off: Not only does UC attract top-tier Ph.D.s from all over the country each year, but roughly 75 percent of its fellows have gone on to receive tenure track faculty appointments. Since 2003, more than 100 former fellows have received faculty appointments at a University of California campus.

The program is so successful, in fact, that a dozen other colleges and universities have used the model to create similar programs, including Harvard, MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania.
