The University of California again has the West's top two hospitals and all five medical centers rank among the nation's best hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report's annual survey.
U.S. News also ranked UC medical centers No. 1 in their metropolitan areas — Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, UC San Diego Medical Center in San Diego and UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco. UC Irvine Medical Center ranked best in Orange County and fifth in the Los Angeles region.
For the 2012-13 America's Best Hospitals survey, U.S. News evaluated about 5,000 hospitals nationwide in 16 specialties, reviewing patient safety, reputation and other factors. Just 148 ranked nationally in even one specialty and only 17 entered the honor roll by scoring high in six or more specialties.
Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center ranked fifth nationally to make the honor roll and was best in the western United States for the 23rd consecutive year. UCLA ranked in the top 20 nationally in 13 of the 16 specialties: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrine disorders; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; gynecology; kidney disorders; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; psychiatry; rheumatology; and urology. It also ranked 25th in pulmonology.
UCSF Medical Center ranked 13th nationally. UCSF placed among the top 20 nationally in eight specialties: cancer, diabetes and endocrine disorders, gynecology, kidney disorders, neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology, rheumatology, and urology. It also ranked 22nd in geriatrics; 25th in ear, nose and throat; and 33rd in orthopedics.
In addition, UC San Diego Medical Center ranked among the top 50 hospitals nationally in four specialties: geriatrics, kidney disorders, pulmonology and urology. UC Irvine Medical Center, which made the Best Hospitals roster for the 12th consecutive year, ranked in one specialty: geriatrics. UC Davis Medical Center ranked in one specialty: cancer.
Also, U.S. News recognized UC San Diego and UC Davis medical centers for being among the nation's most connected hospitals.
Survey results are available online at www.usnews.com/best-hospitals. Overall, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston ranked first; Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was second; the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., was third; and the Cleveland Clinic was fourth.
