The University of California (UC) announced today (Nov. 20) the recipients of the Advancing Faculty Diversity Program (AFD) awards for the academic year 2023-24. This program, designed to transform the professoriate and knowledge workforce of the future, provides crucial support to outstanding faculty members who contribute significantly to the university’s diversity efforts.
The AFD Program, now in its 8th year, has been instrumental in promoting a rich and inclusive educational environment throughout the University of California system. These awards, totaling approximately $2.6 million, are a testament to UC’s ongoing commitment to enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion within its faculty ranks.
Since 2016, AFD has awarded competitive grants to faculty project leads on all 10 campuses in two priority areas: recruitment and improving climate and retention. Building on organizational change research, these projects have contributed to the recruitment of diverse and equity-driven scholars, enhanced campus commitment to diversity and promoted an equitable academic culture for all faculty.
Vice Provost Douglas Haynes expressed enthusiasm for the program, stating, “The Advancing Faculty Diversity Program emphatically demonstrates the University of California’s unwavering commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion across the ten campuses.”
