University of California, AFSCME begin mediation to resolve impasse
Mediation began today between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) to resolve an impasse declared in July.
The Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) oversees the two-day mediation. AFSCME declared an impasse after the two parties could not reach an agreement during negotiations for the next contract.
AFSCME represents 31,000 service and patient care workers across the University system, which includes 10 campuses, six academic health centers and three national labs.

UC offers historic wage increases to UPTE-represented employees
The University of California offered historic wage increases totaling $260 million to employees represented by University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) during bargaining Friday. If accepted, the wage increases would boost the pay for more than 18,000 UC employees represented by UPTE by as much as 21 percent over the three-year contract.

Stocks and real estate power UC’s investments to $180 billion at fiscal year end
The University of California’s Office of the Chief Investment Officer (UC Investments) announced today (August 1) that the UC endowment returned 12.8% at the end of the 2023-2024 fiscal year, while its pension was up 12.2% and working capital, 9.7%. The latest gains bring the total investment portfolio to $180 billion, a $16 billion increase over the previous year. The value of the University’s investment assets has doubled over the past 10 years.
