A year of protest, progress and a very special prize
Just as Time magazine named the Protester as its person of the year, so did unrest shape much of 2011 for the University of California.
Reverberations from January and February's anti-Mubarek protests in Egypt were felt halfway around the world, as UC took emergency measures to evacuate 30 students, faculty and staff enrolled in a study abroad program and taking part in an archaeological dig.
UC’s green investments pay off
The University of California is saving $32 million a year on energy and remains the leader in higher education for adopting green building standards.
Those achievements and others are outlined in the 2011 UC Annual Report on Sustainable Practices at the Board of Regents meeting today (Jan. 18) at UC Riverside.
The UC system added 38 LEED-green certified facilities during 2011 and now has 87, which continues to be the most of any university in the country, according to the annual report.
Energy efficiency programs save UC $21 million per year

UC has won national praise for its 50 LEED-certified facilities, the most of any U.S. university. Many are considered shining examples of the latest in energy-efficient technology.
John Davies, regent emeritus, 1934-2011
San Diego attorney, civic leader and philanthropist John G. Davies, regent emeritus of the University of California and former board chairman, was remembered Tuesday (May 24) by current regents Chair Russell S. Gould as "a man of integrity and honor, among the most esteemed individuals to have ever served on the board."
Davies, a native of San Diego, died May 20 after a battle with cancer. He was 76.
UC cuts administrative costs, seeks new revenue
The University of California Board of Regents met Wednesday and Thursday (Jan. 18-19) at UC Riverside to discuss savings from cost-cutting and development of new revenue to fill a looming budget gap.
But discussion of private contributions as a way to bolster student financial aid had to be put off to March after a group of fewer than 20 protesters disrupted the meeting for nearly an hour.
